4th of July Report Card

So how's that experiment in democracy-thing going for you? Maybe not so good:

According to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, close to 70 percent say that if the signers of the Declaration of Independence could see America today they would be disappointed, while just under 30 percent say the founding founders would be happy with the country 232 years later.

That speculative under-30-percent approval rating from our founding fathers is down from 54% in 2001 — just another of the Bush administration's many Bizzaro-world accomplishments.

Comments

That's a good way to classify GW's "accomplishments." I just hope they're reversible, and that this new Democrat, who I'll vote for, actually wishes to turn them around.

Hmmm: (a little number dithering here...)

54% down to 30%, a further 24% drop--approx. 44% of people who said the founding fathers would approve have dropped away.

Drop in the value of the American dollar vs. the Euro during Bush's term: 41%

Coincidence? I don't think so.

Seems like you guys are a little less than exuberant about your national day.
Hey! At least when things are that low you can look up to the possibilities.

NYC Ed, lots of us share those hopes with you. I think they are reversible. But if the next prez doesn't start to reverse them immediately, we may be in for a long, dark ride. Have a great summer!

Kvatch, that 41% is a startling number, isn't it? Add to the mix the % increase in the price of oil over the Bush years, and you start to get a mathematically pure view of what a heckuva job Georgie has done.

Cart, do you mean possibilities like John McCain? NYC Educator has it right - we've got to hope that the Dem wins and is what he says he is. Problem is, the last couple of weeks have left a lot of us wondering whether this young, exciting guy is really just the same old same old.
