Phony? You Betcha.
That wasn't Sarah Palin I saw debating Joe Biden tonight. That was Ronald Reagan's ghost in drag.
Palin's performance — and the word applies in more than one sense — was a masterpiece of folksy, Reaganesque charm. And don't underestimate the power of that charm. In the 80s, we fell hard for the intoxicating fairytale Reagan spun for us. He promised us Morning in America. He promised that all things were possible if we only wanted them badly enough — and lowered taxes. And today, we're paying the price for our childlike delusions.
Given a choice between substance and smarmy, feel-good rhetoric, we'll take the latter every time. So is it possible there will be a Palin presidency sometime soon? You betcha.
