We're kind of conditioned against that word. In the US, it's a loser of a label, whatever it means. It's unfortunate that this poor word can be used to vilify just about anything--especially if it benefits working people.

Ain't it the truth. Fact is, Americans love the "socialist" programs we have, like social security and medicare. But they have a Pavlovian reaction to the word itself.
