UPDATE: Migrants managed to break down fencing at the border and swarmed across the border into Mexico.
The thousands-strong migrant caravan moving toward a border crossing on the Mexico-Guatemala frontier – and ultimately headed to the U.S. border – turned back on Friday following threats from President Donald Trump.
“Migrants in caravan turn back after moving toward border crossing on Mexico-Guatemala frontier,” the Associated Press reported in a breaking news alert.
President Trump recently threatened to dispatch the U.S. military to shut down the border if Mexico didn’t stop the caravan.
“I am watching the Democrat Party led (because they want Open Borders and existing weak laws) assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, whose leaders are doing little to stop this large flow of people, INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS, from entering Mexico to U.S.,” Trump tweeted.
He added, “In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught - and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!”
The president made it clear that border security is at the top of his policy agenda.
“The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA,” he tweeted. “Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border. All Democrats fault for weak laws!”
On Thursday, Mexico Mexico sent federal police to its border to detain and deport violators.
“The police officers arrived in two planes in Tapachula, a border city that is a popular waypoint for migrants coming up through Central America to cross into Mexico. Local media reports showed hundreds of agents deplaning, some carrying riot gear,” the Daily Caller reported.
It seems American strength has made a big comeback.
