Back in June, if you asked people on the street, few would have been able to tell you what the Betsy Ross flag is. But in July, it is now the subject of a nationwide debate over whether it’s too offensive to be displayed.
But guess who displayed it prominently at his inauguration? President Barack Obama.
The flag flap began when the Wall Street Journal’s sources reported that Nike was pulling its commemorative Independence Day sneakers out of their stores at the demand of quarterback-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick, allegedly, did not like that the Betsy Ross flag was displayed on the heels of the $140 shoes. He complained that the flag — the first U.S. banner to look like our modern flag — was flown during a time when slavery was legal in the U.S.
That, apparently, makes it a symbol of slavery — or so liberals now claim, even though no one cared about the flag last month.
Now as more and more liberals jump on the bandwagon of calling the flag hateful, conservatives are pointing out that Obama had no problem with the Betsy Ross banner hanging behind him as he was sworn into his second term in office.
Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidates Julián Castro and Robert “Beto” O’Rourke have denounced the flag as well, according to Washington Examiner and Jewish Insider reporters.
“I was glad to see that,” Castro said about the shoes being canceled. “There are a lot of things in our history that are still very painful — the Confederate flag that still flies in some places and is used as a symbol.”
Beto said, "I think it's really important to take into account the impression that kind of symbol would have for many of our fellow Americans, respect the decision Nike made and grateful for the conversation [that it is provoking].”
Liberal professor, preacher, and radio host Michael Eric Dyson even compared the Betsy Ross flag to a swastika or burning a cross on someone’s lawn and other “symbols of hate” during an interview on MSNBC, where he contributes as a political analyst.
Conservatives are having fun seeing liberals eat their own as the political correctness culture runs amok. The National Republican Congressional Committee even took a hilarious jab at Kaepernick and the anti-Trump members of the U.S. women’s national soccer team by pointing out Ross’ role as a Founding Mother of America.
“Good luck to @USWNT!” they wrote on Twitter. “Win this one for one of America’s first strong, independent women, Betsy Ross. We have no doubt you’ll be more competitive on the field than @Kaepernick7.”
Their tweet included a video clip of Kaepernick making a devastatingly bad play when he was with the San Francisco 49ers.
