A bizarre debate is raging over whether African-American actor Will Smith is black enough to play the upcoming movie role of...a black character.

It all started when Deadline announced that the Academy Award-nominated actor is poised to play the role of a younger Richard Williams, the father or tennis stars Venus and Serena.

The movie, entitled “King Richard,” will focus on the vision Richard had in helping transform his daughters into tennis champions. Serena is now considered by many as the greatest female tennis player ever with Venus not far behind.

The announcement led to something unexpected, though: a fiery discussion over whether Smith’s skin tone is dark enough to play Richard.
