Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) stunned members of his own party on Sunday by publicly backing President Donald Trump in his G7 feud with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“While I have serious concerns about President Trump’s approach to trade talks with Canada, Prime Minister Trudeau has placed our trade relationship with Canada at risk by publicly feuding with President Trump on the world stage,” Krishnamoorthi said in a stern statement.
Krishnamoorthi argued Trudeau “is sabotaging that cause by driving both sides into their corners instead of encouraging a more diplomatic dialogue.”
“Prime Minister Trudeau may reap some political benefit through feuding with President Trump, but by engaging with the President on the terms he has so far, instead of on mutually productive ones, he is imperiling the economic well-being of millions of Canadians and Americans,” the Democrat added.
President Donald Trump got into a tense back-and-forth with Trudeau on social media after the Canadian prime minister publicly criticized him for his plan to implement new tariffs. "I have made it very clear to the president that it is not something we relish doing. But it is something that we absolutely will do. Because Canadians, we’re polite, we’re reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around," Trudeau recently said.
Trump responded with several strongly worded tweets following the G7 summit, vowing to take an additional look at tariffs on automobiles entering the United States.
“Based on Justin’s false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market,” Trump tweeted.
He continued, “PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, ‘US Tariffs were kind of insulting’ and he ‘will not be pushed around.’ Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!”
President Trump has made it clear that the U.S. will no longer "allow other countries to impose massive Tariffs and Trade Barriers on its farmers, workers and companies. While sending their product into our country tax free."
