A prominent Democrat, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), took time out of his day to publicly mock a gun owner on Monday — but he didn’t expect such a strong counterpunch from his Republican colleague.
“Cool gun,” Swalwell tweeted at a gun owner. “You know what’s cooler? The dreams of children. I’ll fight to keep those alive. #EnoughIsEnough."
That’s when Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) entered and dropped the hammer.
“Right, unless keeping them alive interferes with ‘reproductive freedom.’
#BornAliveAct," Crenshaw responded.
OUCH. That’s going to leave a mark.
Crenshaw was referring to Democrats blocking the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would have required that doctors provide adequate medical care to infants who survive abortion attempts. The bill was defeated after nearly all Senate Democrats opposed the bill, including all of the Democrats running for president in 2020.
In a scathing op-ed, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) insisted that the fight to protect babies is not over.
"It is appalling and Congress must act. That is why we support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. It should be common sense in a just and moral society," the op-ed states.
The lawmakers continue: "This bill requires medical practitioners—those who have sworn to ‘do no harm’—to exercise equal care to a baby who survives an abortion as any other child and provides criminal penalties for anyone who intentionally kills or denies lifesaving care to a child who is born alive after an abortion."
