Socialism is the future of the Democratic Party. That’s what Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez freely admitted during a talk show appearance Tuesday.
According to the Daily Caller, Perez was being interviewed by liberal radio host Bill Press. Press asked Perez for his take on the surprise win of activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York’s 14th congressional district race against incumbent U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in June.
“The fourth most powerful Democrat in the United States Congress, Congressman Joe Crowley, was knocked out by a young woman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28 years old, never ran for office before. Big progressive. Calls herself a Democratic socialist, like Bernie Sanders did,” Press told his audience.
“And in Maryland, Ben Jealous — another strong progressive — wins the Democratic nomination for governor. What’s this tell you about the where the Democratic Party is going today?” Press asked Perez.
After expressing his college-age daughters’ excitement over socialist Ocasio-Cortez’ primary win, Perez said, “She represents the future of our party.”
Ocasio-Cortez ran an incredibly well-crafted ad during her campaign, expressing herself as an inspiring warrior for the people before rattling off a series of socialist policies at the end.
In the ad, she advocates for “Medicare coverage for all, tuition-free public college, and federal jobs guarantee.” She also stands for increased gun restrictions, guaranteed taxpayer-funded housing, the ending of private prisons, and the abolishing of ICE.
