Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was jubilant after she won her battle Thursday to keep Seattle-based Amazon from building its much-coveted second headquarters in Queens, New York.
Most people who aren’t progressive didn’t share in her joy, though. And then the young socialist congresswoman made everything worse by making a statement that revealed just how little she understands about basic economics.
And even liberals are now bashing her embarrassing blunder.
Ocasio-Cortez was among a crowd of angry progressives upset that Long Island City and the state of New York wanted to give Amazon $3 billion in tax breaks as an incentive for them to build HQ2 there.
“Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world,” she wrote on Twitter Thursday, referring to Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post.
But then she revealed the true scope of her economic prowess by complaining that “we were subsidizing those jobs” with all the tax breaks and “we were willing give away $3 billion for this deal” that could have been used to hire teachers, make repairs to the subway system, and “put a lot of people to work” instead.
Her critics, like conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, were quick to point out that not only did the congresswoman just stop the creation of 25,000 jobs in her district, keeping Amazon out won’t suddenly give the local government an extra $3 billion. The $3 billion was simply the amount of its own money that Amazon would get to keep, and now that they’re not going to set up shop in Queens, nobody there gets any of tax revenue from Amazon.
Liberals, like the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” bashed Ocasio-Cortez for her extreme economic stupidity as well on Friday. The congresswoman’s district is the Bronx and part of Queens.
“The opportunities lost there are extraordinary,” host Joe Scarborough said, addressing the jobs, tax revenue, and infrastructure improvements the borough would now lose out on because the congresswoman helped chase Amazon away.
He also added that Amazon coming to their area would have attracted other tech giants, creating more opportunities for economic improvements to an area with a shrinking population.
"When you look at what happens in New York City and New York state, we’re losing people like crazy," Scarborough continued, according to The Hill. "We are going to lose our influence in Washington during the next redistricting because we’ll lose one to two congressional seats. Now we’re telling business don’t come here."
“What’s shocking to me is once again she shows how little she understands not just economics but even unemployment," he said. "She’s the one who said the reason unemployment is so low is because a lot of people have two jobs. She needs to learn basic things about what it is to be a representative."
Scarborough added that 81% of Latinos and 70% of African-Americans in the neighborhood supported Amazon moving there.
Co-anchor Willie Geist pointed out that far more than 25,000 jobs were lost because all types of businesses would have sprung up around Amazon’s HQ2. Co-host Mika Brzezinski advised Ocasio-Cortez act more like a junior congresswoman and follow House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lead more often.
The conclusion of the discussion panel was that Ocasio-Cortez was going to help President Trump get elected with ridiculous actions like this. Scarborough insisted that Republicans shouldn’t criticize the whole Democratic Party for what she’s doing, but the reality is that leading presidential candidates like Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Corey Booker (D-N.J.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) have enthusiastically jumped on board Ocasio-Cortez’ extremely leftist Green New Deal, indicating that the Democratic Party is sliding further left.
“We were subsidizing those jobs. The city was paying for those jobs," Ocasio-Cortez also said Thursday, getting it completely wrong again.
And this is the woman who wants to fundamentally change the U.S. economy, government, and lives of all Americans with her Green New Deal.
