The separation of children from their illegal alien parents during lengthy approval processes at the U.S.-Mexico border has regained national attention this week, especially after liberal comedian Amy Schumer used First Lady Melania Trump’s newly revealed White House Christmas decorations as an opportunity to make snide comments about it.
But a new report from the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday revealed why there is such intense scrutiny of family units who cross our border and ask for asylum: a stunning number of those families are fake.
According to the Washington Examiner, the DHS report showed that 170 family units lied to authorities, claiming that their members were related to each other when there was, in fact, no familial relation. That data was collected between April and September this year.
Also concerning was the number of young adults falsely claiming to be kids in these family units in order to gain entry into the U.S. 87 of the 170 family units fell into that category. More than 160 adults were found to be pretending to be minors.
On top of that, “Over the last two years, we have seen a 110 percent increase in male adults showing up at the border with minors. Further from April 19, 2018 to September 30, 2018, 507 aliens were encountered as a family unit and were separated as they were not a legitimate family unit,” said DHS spokeswoman Katie Waldman.
“This data does not show nor does DHS assert that all minors apprehended as part of a family unit are illegitimate, but it does indicate that there is a significant problem that provides DHS the needed authority to protect the best interests and welfare of all children,” the department said.
Waldman blamed this increase of fraud cases on a Clinton-era loophole that allows illegal aliens to game the system by gaining entry into the U.S. if they have “their children” on them, according to the Daily Caller.
“In response to the misreporting from multiple outlets, I wanted to highlight the rampant fraud taking place at our Southern border,” she wrote. “Aliens know that if they bring ANY minor with them they will be apprehended by Border Patrol and released into the interior of the United States.”
“This is a direct result of the Clinton-era Flores Settlement decree that has created a massive loophole which allows alien family units to illegally cross the border and enter the United States after a short detention,” she continued. “This well-known loophole acts a magnet for family units and entices smugglers to use children as a way to gain access to the United States by posing a family unit.”
“Word has gotten out.”
