Learning about the death of your father is hard enough, but finding out about it from a TV news report? Absolutely awful.
That’s what happened to Jeb Bush, the second oldest son of former President George H.W. Bush.
Neil Bush, the third oldest son, shared how that happened while speaking at a private reception, according to CBS affiliate KHOU. The event was attended by members of H.W. Bush’s administration and his Points of Light Foundation, an organization that coordinates volunteers that serve in communities.
“Jeb, interestingly enough, was asleep and turns off all his equipment at night so we couldn’t reach him,” Neil said. “[Jeb] woke up at 4 in the morning and turned on the TV and found out that his dad had passed away.”
“But every grandchild and every sibling was able to tell our father and our grandfather what an amazing man he was,” Neil added to the reception guests.
Shortly after hearing the news, Jeb posted on Twitter, “I already miss the greatest human being that I will ever know. Love you Dad!”
Evangelist Franklin Graham replied a few hours later, “Praying for you and the family @JebBush.”
In a Washington Post opinion piece, Jeb said he “never met a man as remarkable as” his dad and “never will again.”
“George H.W. Bush lived a life of astonishing fullness as leader, politician, public servant, hero, friend and family man,” he wrote. “He did almost everything a person could do in their lifetime — including jumping from an airplane at age 90. And he excelled at most.”
He concluded, “George H.W. Bush was a wonderful human being who possessed a strong faith in God and believed there is greatness in each of us. The occasion of his passing should serve as a reminder that we can — by living life to the fullest, keeping our eye on the common good and working together — build a more perfect union here at home and a more peaceful world abroad.”
Jeb and President Trump became fierce rivals during the race for the Republican presidential nomination, but Jeb said Trump "couldn’t have been nicer" when he called him to offer his condolences for his dad’s death, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Our prayers go out to the Bush family during this difficult time.
