Good Grief! Liberal Professor Accuses Mary Poppins of Donning Blackface

If the daily discussion over what’s racist or not in America seems to you to be spinning into madness, you’re not alone.

Amidst Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s scandal over a blackface photo in his yearbook, a liberal professor is blasting actress Julie Andrews for her “shameful flirting with blackface” during her 1964 role as “Mary Poppins” in the classic Disney film.

Don’t remember the British nanny donning blackface?

In his New York Times op-ed piece, Linfield College Professor Daniel Pollack-Pelzner pointed to the famous chimney sweep dancing scene where Poppins tries to powder her face and ends up putting more soot on it.

Even though not included in the movie, Pollack-Pelzner points out that the 1943 book “Mary Poppins Opens the Door” has a character referring to a soot-covered chimney sweep as a “black heathen.” And in the movie, next-door neighbor Admiral Boom calls the chimney sweeps “Hottentots” as they dance on a nearby roof.

Even in light of a few ignorant slurs contained in the original Mary Poppins books, people found Pollack-Plezner’s insinuating that Andrews is bordering on a blackface racist “something quite atrocious.”

Meanwhile, a discussion panel on NBC’s “Today Show” tried to put blame on President Trump for the Northam’s scandal involving a blackface photo in his 1984 yearbook.

Yes, seriously.

According to Fox News, co-host Craig Melvin asked a discussion panel why the whole issue of blackface is “all of a sudden front and center in America again?”

Eddie Glaude Jr., a Princeton University professor, replied, “I think it has something to do with what Donald Trump has unleashed. It has something to do with the reservoir that’s underneath our politics that can always be activated at any moment. So it’s not like it’s something new has happened. It’s always underneath. It’s the undertow.”

So, if Hillary Clinton was president, that 1984 yearbook photo wouldn’t be considered racist?

Zerlina Maxwell, who serves as MSNBC’s political analyst, fed into Glaude’s bizarre logic by driving the conversation full-speed into what Trump is allegedly doing now rather than asking the professor to further explain just what the connection is between him and Northam.

“You know, young children of color are dealing with kids saying, ‘Build the wall.’ Donald Trump has normalized this overt display of racism,” Maxwell said without explaining how exactly wanting border security equals racism.

Northam ignored calls from his own Democratic Party to resign after he admitted to wearing blackface while standing next to someone in a Ku Klux Klan garb in a photo from his medical school yearbook. The next day, Northam did an about-face and denied being in the picture but bizarrely admitted to wearing blackface for a Michael Jackson dance competition instead.
