An emotional video captured people’s attention this week of a 7-year-old girl being reunited with her Guatemalan mom after spending two months apart. They are shown in a tearful embrace.
The Daily Caller referred to the woman, Buena Ventura Martin Godinez, as an illegal immigrant. A child welfare agency had placed Janne in someone’s care in Michigan before eventually reuniting the family.
Godinez was deeply distraught after being separated from her daughter, although she was able to keep in contact with her via telephone. According to Inside Edition, Janne and her father were separated after illegally crossing the border together and demanding asylum. Godinez and her young son slipped in separately around the same time and have been living in Miami.
In other words, Godinez and her daughter were first separated in Central America, not the U.S., but had expected to be reunited shortly after Janne trespassed into the U.S. with her dad. Her dad is still in custody.
Godinez had a strong message to other people not going through the proper channels to receive asylum in the U.S.
"I would advise people to find another country to seek refuge... because here the law is very tough,” she said. “People don't have a heart.”
In other words, immigration laws are actually enforced at the U.S. border. Trump has signed an executive order to keep illegal alien families together rather than being separated upon being caught and says he’ll reunite separated families.
However, Trump and congressional Republicans have found many of their efforts to keep families together hampered by every single House Democrat voting against their solutions because the immigration reform bills include funding to boost border security.
Trump officials, like Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, have made it clear that asylum seekers need to show up at ports of entry into the U.S. and follow the rules like everyone else.
“DHS is not separating families legitimately seeking asylum at ports of entry,” Nielsen explained during a June 18 press conference.
The president last week emphasized the need for deporting illegal aliens immediately rather than having families waiting in legal limbo and uncertainty in an overloaded system.
“When people come into our Country illegally, we must IMMEDIATELY escort them back out without going through years of legal maneuvering,” he wrote on Twitter. “Our laws are the dumbest anywhere in the world. Republicans want Strong Borders and no Crime. Dems want Open Borders and are weak on Crime!”
