As Representative-elect Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) becomes one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, the New York Times used an article about her to take a shot at Christians. And then a liberal professor used the same article to take a shot at America, and now the internet is laughing.
The Times article quotes the University of Virginia’s religion professor Larycia Hawkins, who said that Omar — a liberal progressive — is “the epitome of the so-called American dream, but for much of white Christian America, she’s an American nightmare.”
And then another American professor — Guardian contributor Christian Christensen, who is currently teaching journalism at Stockholm University — threw in some statistics to try to make...some sort of point.
“Just a reminder: Somalia (24%) has a higher percentage of women in their national parliament than does the US (23%),” Christensen tweeted in reply to the Times article about Omar.
That statement had a lot of people scratching their heads, or simply shaking them in amusement:
On Monday, the Washington Examiner also pointed out that the Times article glossed over Omar’s stance of punishing Israel through the BDS (boycott, divest, and sanction Israel) movement. And they didn’t mention her anti-Israel statements in the past.
