UPDATED AT 11:30 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday with President Trump's response.
90-year-old Atlanta billionaire Bernie Marcus has donated $2 billion of his wealth over the years to numerous places, including a trauma center, stroke research center, and autism center.
“What Bernie has done, and what he plans to do in his lifetime, will not only bring incredibly significant impact on those nonprofit institutions today but will also continue to benefit those organizations for generations to come,” said Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta president Alicia Philipp, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Yet because he also chooses to donate money to one political candidate they do not like, liberals are boycotting the company Marcus helped create — even though he’s no longer involved with it.
That’s some liberal logic for you.
Marcus co-founded Home Depot and is known for giving away massive amounts of money from his personal fortune to help causes he believes in. He also gave money to President Trump during his first campaign and plans to help support his re-election campaign.
During an AJC interview, Marcus said he doesn’t “agree with every move” Trump has made as president but said, “the truth is he has produced more than anybody else.”
“If we look at this country, I would say that we are better off today than we were eight years ago or six years ago.”
Marcus retired from Home Depot 17 years ago, yet somehow the company he co-founded is still horribly tainted in the eyes of liberals now boycotting it because of his Trump donations, Business Insider reported.
The #boycotthomedepot hashtag has started to spread across Twitter with numerous liberals calling for Home Depot customers to abandon the store. Some vowed to never shop there again.
The bizarre message that sends, though, is that liberals shouldn’t support a company because someone who was involved with the company — over a decade-and-a-half ago — isn’t supporting a liberal for president.
That’s even more irrational than boycotting Chick-fil-A because its CEO said he doesn’t support same-sex marriage — yet still has the runs welcoming fast-food chain in America for customers of all “gender identities.” Dan T. Cathy still leads Chick-fil-A, but Marcus hasn’t led Home Depot for years.
Trump himself later praised Marcus, writing on Twitter, "A truly great, patriotic & charitable man, Bernie Marcus, the co-founder of Home Depot who, at the age of 90, is coming under attack by the Radical Left Democrats with one of their often used weapons. They don’t want people to shop at those GREAT stores because he contributed to your favorite President, me!"
"These people are vicious and totally crazed, but remember, there are far more great people (“Deplorables”) in this country, than bad," he added. "Do to them what they do to you. Fight for Bernie Marcus and Home Depot!"
