Amidst “Empire” star Jussie Smollett’s disintegrating narrative that he was attacked by two President Trump supporters yelling “This is MAGA country,” a crime against two people wearing “Make America Great Again” hats is being reported from Bowling Green, Kentucky.
According to WZTV, 57-year-old James Phillips of Tennessee is accused of flipping off a married couple at a local Sam’s Club on Saturday because they were wearing MAGA hats.
The husband, Terry Pierce, reportedly responded by approaching Phillips and making the obscene gesture back at him. That’s when Pierce said Phillips pulled a gun on him.
According to Pierce, Phillips "pulled a .40 caliber out and stuck it in my face, backed up and said, 'It's a good day for you to die.'"
Pierce added, "I said, 'Then pull the trigger. Put the gun down and fight me or pull the trigger. Whichever one you want.' And he backed up and he said it again, he said, 'It's a good day for you to die,'" according to WBKO.
Phillips then left the store with Pierce following him.
"I went out the front of the store to confront him again and that's when I got him in his car. He couldn't leave because his mother was still in the store. And we were having a verbal altercation outside," Pierce continued. "He tried telling me I assaulted him and I said, 'I never touched you.'"
Video surveillance did not capture Pierce touching Phillips or Phillips pulling a gun on Pierce, but witnesses did confirm that Phillips drew a weapon. When police arrested Phillips, they found him with a .40 caliber Glock with a chambered round and two extra magazines in his pocket, WNKY reported.
Phillips admitted to police that he initially flipped the couple off because of their MAGA hats.
"I have as much right to wear that hat and support my country and my president as he has not to," Piece said later.
Phillips has been charged with first-degree wanton endangerment. According to WBKO, he entered a plea of not guilty Monday morning.
