Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced on Tuesday that the Senate will hold a formal vote on the so-called “Green New Deal,” leaving Democrats literally stunned.

"I've noted with great interest the Green New Deal. And we're going to be voting on that in the Senate. Give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal," McConnell said during a press conference.

Watch his remarks below:

So how do we know Democrats were stunned by the brilliant political move? For one, Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) accused McConnell of trying to “sabotage” talks on climate change by allowing a vote on the Green New Deal, a proposal that he actually co-sponsored.

“Don’t let Mitch McConnell fool you: this is nothing but an attempt to sabotage the movement we are building,” Markey tweeted.

He continued: “He wants to silence your voice so Republicans don’t have to explain why they are climate change deniers. McConnell wants this to be the end, this is just the beginning”

However, it does show that Markey knows how ridiculous the proposal really is.

The Green New Deal, originally pushed by socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) would cost trillions of dollars. It seeks to make air travel obsolete, regulate cow farts, and essentially eliminate the use of fossil fuels. The proposal even initially wanted to pay to support those “unwilling to work.”

Ocasio-Cortez and her team later claimed the provision was posted in error, not that many people believe them.
