Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s announcement on Wednesday that he will be retiring by the end of July sent waves of emotion across the country, but one party seemed to understand more than the other the possible impact this could have on America for decades to come — the Democrats.
In fact, the intense emotions coming from Democrats, the news media, and other liberals on social media overwhelmed the joy conservatives were feeling with a President Trump nomination for the Supreme Court in the near future.
Kennedy has voted in the past to uphold the federal legalization of abortion and deny states the right to ban homosexual marriages. Many in the news media are convinced that those are two decisions that will be completely overturned by Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court.
“Let’s talk facts,” riled-up CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin told viewers on Wednesday. “Let’s talk about what America is going to be like that’s different.”
“You’re going to see 20 states pass laws banning abortion outright,” Toobin continued. “Just banning abortion...because they know that there are going to be five votes on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. Abortion will be illegal in a significant part of the United States in 18 months.”
“There is just no doubt about that,” he declared.
Toobin wasn’t alone in the media in believing that a new Supreme Court justice could lead to hundreds of thousands of babies not being killed by abortion providers in the U.S. each year.
NBC tweeted that a new justice could “put in doubt the future of a nationwide right of access to abortion.”
Vox added death penalty, solitary confinement, affirmative action, and homosexuality to the list of decisions they think will be reversed.
HillReporter.com journalist Ed Krassenstein and Vox correspondent Dylan Matthews also gave their doom and gloom predictions:
Other media figures weighed in, too, especially on the matter of homosexual marriage:
Trump has already revealed his short list of SCOTUS candidates to nominate.
