First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise trip to visit active service members on the USS George H.W. Bush on Wednesday. She showed up to thank them for their service and bring a little Christmas cheer.
She also sat down for an insightful interview with Fox News talk show host Sean Hannity and revealed just how much influence she has over her husband’s decision making — as well as one area they definitely have conflict over.
Talking about Melania’s relationship with her husband in the early days, Hannity asked, “When did you know he was the one? Was there a moment?”
“We had a great chemistry when we met in 1998, and we started dating. We dated for a long time before we got married, and we got married and had a son. But we had great chemistry from day one,” she replied.
“I know people want to know this,” Hannity brought up next. “Do you often weigh in on the issues of the day with the president?
“I know exactly what’s going on; I follow what’s going on. And I give my husband advice and my honest opinion,” she replied. “And sometimes he listens and sometimes he doesn’t.”
And then there’s the area of conflict.
Melania admitted that she’s asked her husband to soften the tone of his tweets at time, but it hasn’t worked yet.
She added, though, that “in the end, it’s his decision. He knows the consequences. He’s an adult. But, you know, he’s a fighter.”
“He’s fighting for America and the American people every day,” she also said. “He wants to govern the right way, and sometimes it’s tough because you can see the media wants to bash and focus on negativity.”
“What’s been the hardest for you since you became first lady? What’s been the hardest thing that you have to deal with?” Hannity also asked.
“I would say the opportunists who are using my name or my family’s name to advance themselves, from comedians to journalists to performers to book writers,” she said.
“Does it hurt?” the talk show host asked.
“It doesn’t hurt,” Melania assured him. “The problem is, they’re writing the history, and it’s not correct.”
“Especially when there’s speculation about you, your family, your marriage? And you address that in past interviews,” Hannity pointed out.
“Yes, I did,” she said. “They like to focus on the gossip, and I would like that they would focus on the substance and what we do. Not just about nonsense.”
“What was it, you said, when he ran you knew he would win?” Hannity asked. “Why did you know?”
Melania answered, “I knew him, I knew how he connects with the people. He built an incredible business. His mind is into the business and to make America great and successful. So I saw how he connects with the people, so that’s why I said, ‘You know, if you run, you will win. It’s [a] possibility.”
