A biological male powerlifter boasted the other day about winning nine weightlifting events and smashing four world records. He was competing in a women’s event.

“What a day, 9 for 9! Masters world squat record, open world bench record, masters world dl record, and masters world total record!,” the powerlifter, who calls himself Mary Gregory, wrote on Instagram.

He also thanked the RAW Powerlifting Federation from “the bottom of my heart,” writing, “As a transgender lifter I was unsure what to expect going into this meet and everyone- all the spotters, loaders, referees, staff, meet director, all made me welcome and treated me as just another female lifter — thank you!”

But now the RAW Powerlifting Federation has stripped Gregory of his four world records, according to a statement they released.

Calling him “actually a male in the process of becoming a Transgender female,” the Federation wrote,  “Our rules, and the basis of separating genders for competition, are based on physiological classification rather than identification.”

They continued: “On the basis of all information presented to the Board of Directors for this particular case…”

“...the conclusion made, is that the correct physiological classification is male.”

Boom. With those simple words, the Federation determined that Gregory’s self-determined gender identity did not matter.

They also declared that “Since the lifter’s gender classification for the purpose of our rules is not consistent with female, no female records will be broken by these lifts” and said his wins would be placed in a newly created “Transgender Division.”

The Federation is still determining if any of Gregory’s lifts will count for anything in the competition.

Even before the ruling, Gregory’s wins and records sparked a massive amount of controversy, including among female Olympic medalists like Sharron Davies and Kelly Holmes.
