Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) boosted her “concentration camp” claims about migrant holding facilities on the border by claiming that she went inside, witnessed terrible things, and heard from the migrants themselves about how “horrifying” the conditions are.
But a Washington Examiner reporter is saying she did no such thing.
Democrats have been claiming that conditions at the many detention facilities for illegal immigrants and asylum-seeking families constitute a humanitarian crisis. Border Patrol agents say that Democrats are exaggerating the conditions and that the overcrowding they’re experiencing in the camps is due to Democrats not approving the funding they need to handle the massive number of people flooding into the ports of entry and sneaking across the border.
For Democrats, the sudden focus on the border has become a political opportunity to blame President Trump for what’s going on and insinuate that he’s a cruel and racist leader.
“Just left the 1st CBP facility,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Monday, referring to an El Paso, Texas station. “I see why CBP officers were being so physically &sexually threatening towards me. Officers were keeping women in cells w/ no water & had told them to drink out of the toilets. This was them on their GOOD behavior in front of members of Congress.”
“Now I’ve seen the inside of these facilities. It’s not just the kids. It’s everyone,” she continued. “People drinking out of toilets, officers laughing in front of members Congress. I brought it up to their superiors. They said ‘officers are under stress & act out sometimes.’ No accountability.”
“After I forced myself into a cell w/ women&began speaking to them, one of them described their treatment at the hands of officers as ‘psychological warfare’ — waking them at odd hours for no reason, calling them wh*res, etc,” AOC claimed. “Tell me what about that is due to a ‘lack of funding?’”
She didn’t explain how she managed to break into a cell while being escorted by Border Patrol agents.
“Now I’m on my way to Clint, where the Trump admin was denying children toothpaste and soap,” she also wrote. “This has been horrifying so far. It is hard to understate the enormity of the problem. We’re talking systemic cruelty w/ a dehumanizing culture that treats them like animals.”
But Examiner reporter Anna Giaritelli says that, according to other reports, Ocasio-Cortez’ eye-witness account can’t be true because she never even went inside the facility.
“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., screamed at federal law enforcement agents ‘in a threatening manner’ during a visit to a U.S. Border Patrol facility in El Paso, Texas, Monday afternoon and refused to tour the facility, according to two people who witnessed it,” Giaritelli tweeted soon after.
Those are two very different stories there.
Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.), who says she toured the facility, too, talked about women telling her they didn’t have running water and being told to drink out of the toilet. But she didn’t say she witnessed any of that herself, which has observers questioning if AOC was simply repeating things she heard but didn’t witness.
Dr. James Dobson, founder and former president of Focus on the Family, toured a McAllen, Texas facility not long ago and described what he saw as heartbreaking. His perspective was a bit different, though.
He described overcrowded facilities and overworked staff members but did not relate any of the horrors that Ocasio-Cortez claims to have seen. He praised Border Patrol agents and blamed the asylum loophole that forces the U.S. to bring every asylum-seeking family into the U.S. — whether a real family or not — for processing and release. He also blamed Democrats for not approving the funding needed to handle the massive number of people trying to get into the country.
