Young Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is definitely a congresswoman with big ideas. And now she has a new worst answer ever for how we’re going to pay for all of them.
Before the release of her Green New Deal on Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez had already made it clear that she thinks the government should provide free college tuition, free universal health care, and a federal jobs and housing guarantee. She’s also been pushing for complete U.S. dependence on energy from renewable sources in the very near future.
Previously, she tried to explain to a questioning Jake Tapper how she plans for America to pay for the $40 trillion needed over the next decade to cover the cost of her dreams. She revealed that Medicare-for-all, for instance, would be paid for with the money it saved everyone.
That answer didn’t make any sense to Tapper, but after mentioning that her massive tax hike plan could raise at least $2 trillion, he concluded, “I assume I’m not going to get an answer for the other $38 trillion dollars.”
Univision’s Jorge Ramos also asked Ocasio-Cortez how she’s going to pay for all this.
“You just pay for it!” she replied before launching again into her argument that we’ll pay for universal health care with all the money people will save from it.
Now Ocasio-Cortez has revealed an even vastly more expensive plan that includes completely replacing plane travel with a new high-speed rail system, getting rid of cows, providing free job training to everyone, upgrading or replacing every single building in America that isn’t green enough, providing “economic stability” to people “unwilling” to work, requiring a living wage sufficient to support a family for every job, mandating that employers offer paid vacation time for everyone, “repairing historic oppression,” eliminating “monopolies and unfair competition,” building electric car charging stations “everywhere,” eliminating the use of fossil fuels, enforcing pollution-free farms and ranches, decommissioning every nuclear power plant, and drastically changing our country into a net-zero producer of emissions, according to an overview and FAQ attached to her non-binding resolution.
Oh, and a lot of this has to happen within the next ten years.
But now she has a new way of explaining how to pay for it all.
In the Green New Deal FAQ, Ocasio-Cortez acknowledges that increasing taxes on billionaires and companies can’t pay for all of this. Thus, we need to pay for everything with our government, which is funded by, um, taxes.
“The Federal Reserve can extend credit to power these projects and investments and new public banks can be created to extend credit,” her plan explained. “There is also space for the government to take an equity stake in projects to get a return on investment.”
So...just print more money?
But here’s the best part: “At the end of the day, this is an investment in our economy that should grow our wealth as a nation, so the question isn’t how will we pay for it, but what will we do with our new shared prosperity.”
“So the question isn’t how will we pay for it, but what will we do with our new shared prosperity.”
Not surprisingly, after an incredible amount of ridicule, the Green New Deal Overview and FAQ have now been deleted from Ocasio-Cortez’ congressional website, but you can still read them here, as provided by the Washington Examiner.
