Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) officially released her Green New Deal on Thursday, and it’s far more extreme than most people probably could have imagined.
One of her plans, in particular, got a laugh of disbelief from a Democratic senator.
According to Fox News, the plan seeks to pour taxpayer money into developing high-speed rail “at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary.”
An accompanying FAQ from Ocasio-Cortez' office makes that a little clearer when it notes that the resolution's lofty goal of reaching net-zero emissions in 10 years in the U.S. is more realistic than aiming for zero emissions “because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.”
By the way, what “net-zero emissions” means is that you can still produce emissions, but now you must pay the government a bunch of money for carbon credits to atone for it. It keeps the emissions flowing but the government gets a lot more of your money.
The plan to replace all air travel with high-speed rail didn’t go over well with Democratic Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono.
“That would be pretty hard for Hawaii,” she laughed.
Other provisions in the plan include guaranteed “economic security” even for people “unwilling” to work and upgrading or replacing “every single building” in America to be more green, according to the Washington Examiner. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Democratic presidential hopefuls Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Cory Booker (D-N.Y.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) have jumped on board the idea. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) couldn’t take it anymore and subtly dismissed the non-binding resolution as a mere pipedream not worth even calling by its correct name.
“It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it right?” Pelosi said, according to Politico.
Pelosi probably realizes what political fodder this will be in the hands of Republicans wanting to topple Democrats in 2020. The campaign ads are easy to envision.
“Want to get rid of beef? Want to end air travel? Want people paid to not work? Want to have your house torn down by the government because it’s not green enough? Want to pay for it all? Vote Democrat!”
