For months, socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has insisted that we need to adopt her all-encompassing Green New Deal because our earth only has 12 years left before nature and civilization collapse from the effects of climate change.
But now she has a new message: Just kidding.
The young congresswoman made that announcement in a tweet on Sunday, writing, “This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and ‘fact check’ it. Like the ‘world ending in 12 years’ thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal. But the GOP is basically Dwight from The Office so who knows.”
But many of her supporters actually believed her, as well as other climate alarmists like Democratic presidential candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke.
And she just said they have the “intelligence of a sea sponge.” Ouch.
As for the GOP, Republicans have been split on whether to believe that AOC honestly thinks the world is ending in 12 years or has simply been using it to create a panic and get people to give up their money and freedoms in order to greatly boost the power of the federal government so it can implement her Green New Deal.
But there’s a bigger problem in all of this for Ocasio-Cortez: Actually convincing people that she was just joking.
Her claim started in January, with Ocasio-Cortez saying, “Millennials and people, you know, Gen Z and all these folks that will come after us are looking up and we’re like: ‘The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change and your biggest issue is how are we gonna pay for it?'” at an MLK Now event in New York City, The Hill reported.
Then in April, she actually blasted anyone who treated her “world ending in 12 years” claim as a joke.
"For everyone who wants to make a joke about that, you may laugh, but your grandkids will not. So, understand that the internet documents everything," she said during an Instagram Live session, according to RealClear Politics "For those of you who are trying to mock and delay this moment, I mean, I just feel bad for you. I pity you for your role in history right now."
“Climate change is here + we’ve got a deadline: 12 years left to cut emissions in half,” she tweeted later in April.
“Twelve years to change everything,” she narrated in a video, which looked ahead to how she saved the world in the future. “How we got around, how we fed ourselves, how we made our stuff, how we lived and worked — everything. The only way to do it was to transform our economy, which we already knew was broken.”
And, yet, now we’re supposed to believe her when she said she meant it as a joke. Try again, AOC.
