Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has made another doomsday claim about our environment on Monday. But after she said “just kidding” about one of her biggest claims on Sunday, now nobody knows whether or not to take her seriously anymore.
Not that many people, outside of her most ardent supporters, have actually been taking her seriously.
Ocasio-Cortez was speaking at a Green New Deal rally on Monday in New York, according to Boston.com, when she said, “It was reported today that this weekend for the first time in human history we have reached atmospheric levels of carbon at 415 parts per million. This has never been seen in recorded human history.”
She didn’t mention the fact that humans haven’t been recording carbon levels for very long.
“In fact, meteorologist Eric Holthaus and journalist said simply about this measurement and development, ‘We do not know a planet like this.’ The last time our planet hit 415 was in the Pliocene period,” she continued, speaking with vastly too much certainty about what supposedly happened over 2 million years ago.
“Oceans were 90 feet higher. Bacteria and diseases we have never seen before roamed the Earth. Humans did not exist,” Ocasio-Cortez continued, repeating mere theories as if they were cold, hard facts.
She also didn’t address that humans certainly could not have seen those bacteria and diseases before if humans did not exist in that time period.
“We have never seen a planet like this,” she added, even though our knowledge of planets outside our own solar system is extremely limited. “And a planet like this is exactly what we are going to get, and it is exactly what we are going to inherit from previous generations if we do not act positively now."
Watch that ridiculous part of her speech below:
The young congresswoman appeared to be speaking in all seriousness on Monday, but for all we know, she could have simply been employing “dry humor” and “sarcasm” like she just claimed she’s been doing all along with her “world ending in 12 years” claim.
On Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and ‘fact check’ it. Like the ‘world ending in 12 years’ thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal.”
Not only did she insult her ardent supporters by saying that they had the “intelligence of a sea sponge” for believing her, but she also contradicted the fact that she appeared to be very, very serious when she repeatedly claimed we only have 12 years left.
In fact, even on Tuesday, she still had a tweet from April stating we have “12 years left” pinned to the top of her Twitter newsfeed.
When and when are we not supposed to take you seriously, AOC?
Other Twitter users certainly had a field day with her newest claim...or joke — who knows?
