Democrats are expecting to see a crowded field of candidates running against each other for a shot at taking on President Trump in 2020. Among the many candidates, though, few seem to make Trump more eager for a fight than former Vice President Joe Biden.
In a newly aired CBS interview, news anchor Jeff Glor asked Trump what he thinks about the possibility of running against someone the president has nicknamed “Crazy Joe.”
“Well, I dream, I dream about Biden,” Trump replied. “That's a dream. Look, Joe Biden ran three times. He never got more than 1 percent, and President Obama took him out of the garbage heap, and everybody was shocked that he did. I'd love to have it be Biden.”
Biden will be 78 just after the November 2020 election. Trump will be 74.
“I think I'd like to have any one of those people that we're talking about…You know, there's probably — the group of seven or eight right now. I'd like to run against any one of them, but Biden never by himself, could never do anything,” the president added.
According to Fox News, Biden teased the idea of running again during a public appearance on Tuesday.
"I know I have to make up my mind and I have to do it by January," he said.
Trump continued his criticism of Biden, adding, “President Obama took him, made him vice president, and he was fine. But you go back and look at how he succeeded in running when he ran two or three times, I don't think he ever broke one [percent]. He was at the one or less level, one percent or less level.”
This all comes at the same time a meme has been recirculating on social media suggesting that it’s entirely legal for Obama to become president again if he runs as Joe Biden’s running mate, is elected vice president, and then becomes the president after Biden dies in office or resigns.
A loophole in the 22nd Amendment seems to allow this scheme to be a possibility, but both Snopes and PolitiFact point out that the 12th Amendment seems to fill that loophole and, at the very least, would put such a dirty move in the hands of the courts.
