This Wednesday, President Donald Trump hosted a Sports and Fitness Day on the White House Lawn. The event is known as “Field Day” and 250 children were invited to participate in a variety of games to promote the importance of youth sports.
Every president since Dwight D. Eisenhower has formed a Council on Fitness to focus on various sports, nutrition, and well-being initiatives.
President Trump’s Council has been tasked with the goal of reversing the declining trend of youth sports participation and ensure that all American children are given the opportunity to compete.
The White House believes that sports participation and physical activity are crucial for child development, personal and social growth, lifetime health and fitness habits, as well as a competitive spirit.
Children that play sports have a higher educational achievement, earn higher income as adults and have improved mental health.
Joining the 250 kids on the White House lawn were famous athletes such as Herschel Walker, Lou Ferrigno, Mariano Rivera, and Misty May-Treanor. President Trump and daughter Ivanka Trump were in attendance as well.
The kids were able to play a variety of sports and games, from flag football, to baseball, to volleyball.
