Restaurant Owner Bans MAGA Supporters, Tries to Backtrack in Desperate Attempt to Keep Customers

It’s generally a good business practice to increase your number of potential customers rather than drastically decreasing it.

But that didn’t seem to be in the mind of one restaurant owner who announced to the world on Twitter that he was banning customers wearing “Make America Great Again” hats.

According to ABC 13, Kenji Lopez-Alt of Wursthall Restaurant wrote a tweet on Jan. 27 saying, “It hasn’t happened yet, but if you come to my restaurant wearing a MAGA cap, you aren’t getting served, same as if you come in wearing a swastika, white hood, or any other symbol of intolerance and hate.”

Lopez-Alt, who is also the author of “The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science,” runs the restaurant in San Mateo, just south of San Francisco.

As of Thursday morning, the tweet had been deleted, but no clarification has been giving showing that Lopez-Alt has taken back his MAGA ban. Liberals praised the chef’s actions, but it did not go over well with President Trump’s supporters and others on Twitter.

It’s unclear what exactly prompted Lopez-Alt to make this political statement at this time. Considering the timing, it may have been in reaction to the misreported confrontation between the Covington Catholic high school boys, a Native American activist, and a group of black supremacists in Washington, D.C.

Making public anti-Trump statements is not unusual for the popular chef, but this is certainly the harshest in recent times.

In a tweet deleted late Thursday morning, four days after it was posted, Lopez-Alt said "MAGA hats are like white hoods except stupider because you can see exactly who is wearing them." He also said in a reply that "Some of those that wear red caps, are the same that burn crosses."

Another restaurant that got really political suffered the consequences of it last year. According to White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the owner of the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia told her she had to leave because she worked for Trump.

According to her dad, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sanders left the restaurant but was followed out by the owner who yelled at her and encouraged other people to protest her as she went to a different restaurant across the street.

As a result, pro-Trump protesters picketed the Red Hen for days. In fact, the restaurant lost so much business from the incident that the local tourism board had to bail them out financially to keep them afloat.
