Former Vice President Joe Biden may still be solidly in first place in the crowded field of Democratic presidential candidates, but that lead is shrinking.

He saw a huge spike in popularity when he finally announced his bid for the presidency, causing former frontrunner Bernie Sanders to drop sharply in popularity. But as Sanders has regained some of his fans, Biden has seen a dramatic dip in a roundup of major polls gathered by RealClearPolitics.

And it’s even worse for Biden in Iowa, according to a new CNN poll.

He’s got only 24% of likely caucusgoers’ support in the heavily watched state, which will hold its caucus on Feb. 3 — the first of any major primary or caucus in the nation. Sanders is not that far behind with 16%, shadowed by Elizabeth Warren with 15% and Pete Buttigieg with 14%.

Those numbers are making Biden desperate, and he’s making a “pathetic” attempt to gather more support, according to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

“Happy #BestFriendsDay to my friend, @BarackObama,” Biden wrote on Twitter, tagging the president he served with for eight years.

“This is pathetic,” Limbaugh said on his show Monday. “He’s desperate to get Obama’s endorsement, and Obama won’t go there. Obama hasn’t touched him.”

“It really is pitiful.”

Numerous conservative commentators noted that Obama didn’t bother to reply to or retweet Biden’s shout-out.

Limbaugh continued: “So Biden’s trying to make it look like Obama’s his friend, he’s my friend, I like Joe, Joe likes me, I like Barack, and Barack likes me. You know, these friendship bracelets, these things are made by 7- and 8-year-old girls. That’s who makes them and wears them.”

Biden’s friendship bracelet tweet was overloaded with replies mocking his gesture.
