It appears the jig may soon be up for "Empire" star Jessie Smollett.
Multiple sources reportedly told ABC7 Chicago Eyewitness News that Smollet and the two "persons of interest" in the alleged hate crime case "staged the attack - allegedly because his character was being written out of the show Empire."
It should be noted that the Chicago Police Department's top spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, released a statement on Twitter that said: “Media reports about the Empire incident being a hoax are unconfirmed by case detectives."
Police also raided the home of the two “persons of interest” in “Empire” star Jussie Smollett’s case on Wednesday, revealing a number of stunning details about the investigation.
CBS Chicago’s Charlie De Mar reported that both men captured on surveillance video near the alleged crime scene are of “Nigerian decent.” They have also both reportedly appeared as extras on “Empire,” the same show that Smollett is a cast member.
“BREAKING:Police raided the home of two persons of interest in Jussie Smollett case last night. Both men are of Nigerian decent and have appeared as extras on the show. Police took bleach, shoes electronics and more.Officers asked family if they knew #Jussiesmollett," De Mar tweeted.
The reporter also included police records that indicate that officers confiscated “bleach” and a “red hat” from the home.
This is potentially significant as Smollett initially claimed that two masked men attacked him, poured bleach on him, and wrapped a noose around his neck. He also claimed they shouted racial slurs and “This is MAGA country.” Since then, many have doubted the authenticity of the actor’s story.
Despite all this contradictory evidence, Smollett told GMA that the men seen in the video were indeed his attackers.
In another explosive development, a report from CWB Chicago suggests that police were able to identify the persons of interest using Smollett’s phone records.
“So it looks like I was correct in that they got their own copies of the phone records, then compared them to what Smollett gave them,” Daily Wire reporter Emily Zanotti tweeted.
