First Lady Melania Trump recently took a break from the public spotlight for a few weeks to recover from a kidney operation. In her absence, her husband’s critics took the opportunity to concoct malicious conspiracy theories about President Trump doing terrible things from her.
Even media figures helped push theories of abuse, divorce, or death, fueled by the mainstream media’s daily obsession with noting Melania’s absence and suggesting that she was not merely healing after a surgery.
After Melania made an appearance at the White House this week, Trump took to Twitter to stand up for his wife again, blasting the ugly attacks on his family.
And during her first public appearance outside the White House on Wednesday, the president and first lady shared a tender moment as he told her in front of the news cameras how much the well-mannered people of America adored her.
Thanking people during his opening address at a FEMA meeting, Trump began, “We have to start with our great first lady, Melania. Thank you, Melania.”
“She’s doing great,” he continued. “She went through a little rough patch but she’s doing great.”
“We’re very proud of her. She’s done a fantastic job as first lady,” he added. “The people love you. The people of our country love you.”

Trump, Melania, Vice President Mike Pence, and other administration officials met with FEMA to discuss the upcoming 2018 hurricane season. The president made it clear he wanted the federal government to be well prepared for the worst so that could lend a hand to — but not override — the efforts of local communities in rapid responses.
