An Antifa protest turned violent in Portland, Oregon this weekend, resulting in several people being brutally beaten, and now Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx.) and conservative commentator Charlie Kirk are demanding that the city’s mayor be investigated for allowing those types of attacks to happen by telling police in the past to use a hands-off approach to left-wing protesters like Antifa.
The Antifa protest this past Saturday was against a “Him Too” event, intended to bring to light men who suffer sexual assault as well as men who are falsely accused of committing sexual assault, according to the Daily Wire.
An elderly man, John Blum, was reportedly blinded with mace and beaten in the head with a crowbar while attending the “Him Too” event in downtown Portland.
Images showed attendee Adam Kelly’s head split open in another beating. Conservative journalist Michelle Malkin reported that he was hit in the head with numerous objects, including nunchucks and fists.
Then openly gay, conservative Quillette journalist Andy Ngo reported being beaten by Antifa members. He shared images of his bruised and bloodied face.
On his Twitter page, Ngo also posted a profanity-laced video of himself getting kicked and punched by numerous hooded and masked assailants as well as getting hit with mace and having eggs and milkshakes thrown at him. He said that his camera equipment was stolen as well.
A GoFundMe page set up by Malkin to help Ngo pay for his “security and medical needs” says he suffered “brain bleeding, multiple facial/head wounds, and other injuries” from the beaten. The Fund had raised nearly $150,000 by 4 p.m. Eastern on Monday.
According to Ngo, the Portland Police finally came to his aid after he reported being assaulted three times that day.
Cruz blasted Democratic Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler for not allowing police to be more involved and prevent these types of attacks.
He tweeted on Sunday, “To federal law enforcement: investigate & bring legal action against a Mayor who has, for political reasons, ordered his police officers to let citizens be attacked by domestic terrorists.”
After the mayor contradicted Cruz, he replied on Tuesday, "Ok, Mr. Mayor. You want [to] talk 'facts.' Great. Fact 1: a conservative journalist was violently assaulted by ANTIFA thugs on the streets of your city. Fact 2: you said 'I support the Portland Police Bureau’s decision not to intervene.' Fact 3: you have a pattern of withdrawing police protection to further your political agenda."
He continued: "When ANTIFA terrorists threatened ICE in Portland, you ORDERED police not to protect federal agents. Here’s a US Senate resolution (which I joined) condemning your partisan civil rights violations."
Kirk of Turning Point USA also tweeted, “The Portland Mayor who told his police force to ‘stand down’ in the face of an ANTIFA mob should be investigated and prosecuted. He's letting his city burn Allowing journalists to be attacked. Elderly citizens he represents are being beaten in the streets. He has to go!”
