Thousands of McDonald’s patrons are signing a petition to urge the world’s biggest fast food chain to bring back plastic straws because the new paper ones are ruining their drinks.
McDonald’s has been testing the new “eco-friendly” straws at various locations in the U.S. since last year. In the U.K. and Ireland, every one of the 1,361 McDonald’s locations has had to dump the plastic in favor of paper, The Hill reported.
But it appears the new straws aren’t cutting it.
As for 4:15 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, nearly 37,000 people had signed the petition. Complaints about the straws are flooding in.
One petition signer explained, “Absolutely useless, they get soggy and end up giving off a cardboard taste to the drink you have, no point in having a paper straw with a plastic lid, much rather have a paper lid and a plastic straw 🤷🏻♀️”
“I personally hate the paper straws as they leave a weird film on my teeth,” another person wrote. “The straws are not working for drinking, they should consider bio degradable plastic straws made from natural products. It is do able.”
Someone similarly pointed out: “Dissolves way to quick plus same feeling on your teeth as chewing kitchen foil.”
“Horrible, can just taste paper,” one commenter simply said.
“My son with sensory issues can't use the paper straws and gets very upset and they just bend and dissolve,” said one mom.
“The appear straw are t working its impossible to drink a milkshake and they just go soggy,” complained another woman. “There are many alternatives which could be used instead.”
McDonald’s made the move to all-paper straws in response to UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s ban on single-use plastic straws, according to The Hill. But it appears she forced the chain to take action before they had a good solution.
