Billionaire hedge fund manager, philanthropist, and liberal activist Tom Steyer has broken his long-repeated promise: He is, indeed, running for president.
The Democrat has long said that he’s using his money and influence to battle President Trump through other means than running against him as a candidate, but a day after candidate Eric Swalwell dropped out of the race, Steyer jumped in.
And a whole lot of Democrats are telling him no.
According to his campaign commercial and associated tweets, Steyer is running on the idea that big corporations are behind just about all the ills in our society. Even though the billionaire has made his living from corporations, he insists he’s now going to stop them.
He’s also continuing to make impeaching Trump part of his campaign, even though Steyer can’t impeach Trump if he himself becomes president.
But many, many liberals replying to his announcement don’t want him to join the crowded field of Democratic candidates.
