Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said his party is willing to work with President Donald Trump on health care, immigration and infrastructure, on CNN’s “New Day” Wednesday.
“Of course we want to work in a bipartisan fashion. I think we can get an infrastructure bill,” Perez said.
“If you look at the last two weeks, they said they were going to protect pre-existing conditions … let’s take them at their word. We’ve talked about a DREAM Act before. And one day [Trump] was for it and one day he was against it. Will he stand up to the far right wing of his party? That remains to be seen. If he does, we can get things done.”
Perez said Democratic priorities include continuing to address pre-existing condition coverage, increasing funding for public education and reforming the immigration system. He also said oversight of the executive branch will be a part of the Democrats’ agenda.
“I think oversight is important in the sense that right now the system of checks and balances is not existent,” he declared. “Look at all the cabinet secretaries that have been involved in wrongdoing and not an ounce of oversight from the Republicans. I mean, that’s unconscionable. This is taxpayer money that is being wasted.”
“I am sure we’ll expect [oversight] hearings because we have a constitutional duty of oversight in the U.S. House,” Perez continued.
He also claimed Democrats won all the major gubernatorial races but ignored big wins from Republicans in Florida, Ohio, Georgia and Iowa.
“We’re going to fight for the issues that people care about. We won the House and we won all these governorships and again it’s been I think 25 years since one side won seven governorships in one race and we won because we’re focusing on the issues that people care about,” Perez concluded.
