Too Far? Scottish Parliament BANS ‘Gingerbread Men’ over Fears of Sexism, British Media Says

The battle against sexism has taken a turn so extreme that even many liberals are mocking it.

According to the UK’s Daily Mail, the Scottish Parliament has recently decreed that the “gingerbread man” must now be referred to as a “gingerbread person” in a move to help “stamp out sexism.”

The UK’s Express elaborated, saying the name change was proposed after 30 percent of women working in the parliament building said they’d experienced sexual harassment on the job. Apparently, renaming gingerbread men is supposed to help solve that.

It’s unclear from the Irish Post or other outlets if the move applies to all of Scotland or just the parliament’s coffee shop. Most likely just the coffee shop. Either way, it’s receiving a whole lot of blowback.

Annie Wells — who British media outlets refer to as a spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives party — commented, “Surely the Scottish Parliament has got better things to do than worry about what to call gingerbread men? This is an utterly pointless gesture which simply trivializes the real issues of gender equality.”

Comedian Ricky Gervais mocked the parliament’s decision after Piers Morgan of “Good Morning Britain” shared the news, writing on Twitter, “Why are they ALL ginger? Racist.”

Others weighed in, too.

This person had a good point:

Quick, someone needs to inform this woman that these “body positive” gingerbread MEN are still offensive!
