President Trump is making the biggest move of any president in years for the protection of unborn children. His administration has now released exactly how they want to change the “family planning” narrative from life-taking to life-giving.
During his presidential campaign, Trump made a promise to defund Planned Parenthood. On Friday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a plan to start doing that.
Their new rules would affect Title X, which is a taxpayer-funded program aimed at helping low-income individuals make family planning decisions. Under Obama’s administration, health providers were required to “provide abortion counseling and referral,” even if they have to go against their conscience to do so.
But this new plan protects pro-life health providers by removing that mandate. Here are other things it would do:
— Separate Title X funding from Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics and send the money to other types of healthcare clinics instead.
— Boost Title X transparency to make sure that none of its programs are connected to Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics. In other words, keep an eye on where the money is going.
— Provide more counseling and protection for victims of sexual abuse.
— Through counseling, help parents communicate with teens who have gotten pregnant.
According to Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.), writing an opinion piece for The Hill, “Nothing in the Trump administration’s proposed rule will limit women’s access to health care services. Instead, it will help ensure families receive comprehensive care and treatment from facilities offering a wide range of healthcare services, which far outnumber abortion clinics.”
Bucshon is a physician who says that Planned Parenthood’s argument that their ability to provide women’s health care would be suppressed is flawed because organizations like Planned Parenthood “exist first and foremost to provide abortion services. Data from the nation’s largest provider of abortion services’ own annual reports make this clear.”
