The Democrats were up in arms Friday morning after a “bombshell” report claimed that President Trump directed his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress.
According to BuzzFeed News, two of their unnamed federal law enforcement sources allegedly said Trump told Cohen to lie about plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow in the midst of the 2016 presidential campaign.
BuzzFeed’s sources claim it was Trump who directed his lawyer to lie about the timing of the project in order to direct attention away from the investigation into whether or not Trump colluded with Russia in order to win the presidency.
If true, BuzzFeed said it would mean the president knowingly tried to obstruct FBI and special counsel investigations. Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison recently for lying to Congress, according to The Hill.
“Cohen made the false statements to minimize links between the Moscow Project and Individual 1 [Trump] and give the false impression that the Moscow Project ended before the ‘Iowa caucus…the very first primary,’ in hopes of limiting the ongoing Russia investigations,” Mueller wrote at the time, according to Fox News.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has been Trump’s lawyer in the Russia investigation, dismissed the unconfirmed report from BuzzFeed.
“If you believe Cohen, I can get you a great deal on the Brooklyn Bridge,” he said.
Trump also responded on Friday, quoting Fox News’ Kevin Corke, who said, “Don’t forget, Michael Cohen has already been convicted of perjury and fraud, and as recently as this week, the Wall Street Journal has suggested that he may have stolen tens of thousands of dollars....”
“Lying to reduce his jail time!” the president also wrote. “Watch father-in-law!”
Not surprisingly, many Democrats are jumping around excitedly because of the report, hoping it’s true so they can try to get the president impeached.
But other people have pointed a few things out:
