Trump Just Took a Sledgehammer to Another One of Obama’s Race-Based Policies

The Trump administration is scrapping an Obama-era policy that advised schools to factor in a student’s race when making decisions about admissions rather than focusing on merit alone.

The policy change will give colleges peace-of-mind if they wish to use a “race-neutral” approach that treats all students the same, regardless of race or gender. The Trump administration’s policy does not carry the force of law as it is only considered “guidance.”

"The Trump administration’s decisions on Tuesday brought government policy back to the George W. Bush administration guidances,” the New York Times reported. “The Trump administration did not formally reissue Bush-era guidance on race-based admissions, but, in recent days, officials did repost a Bush administration affirmative action policy document online.”

In 2011, the Obama administration claimed its updated affirmative action guidance was intended to “further the compelling interests in achieving diversity and avoiding racial isolation.”

"In some cases, race-neutral approaches will be unworkable because they will be ineffective to achieve the diversity the institution seeks,” the guidance said.

However, schools that make admissions selections based on race could potentially “face a Justice Department investigation or lawsuit, or lose federal funding from the Education Department,” according to the New York Times.

It’s just the latest Obama policy to be wiped away by President Trump, who has been steadily chipping away at his predecessor’s legacy since he took office.

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, a longtime Trump ally, celebrated the policy shift.

"Trump to end Obama era guidances for colleges that directed the use of race as a primary component for college admission," he tweeted. "The left is obsessed with race. Instead of test scores and grades, Obama preferred racial quotas as guidelines. We shouldn’t judge people by their skin color!"

Plenty of Trump's critics claimed the policy would be detrimental to minorities.
