President Trump and numerous conservatives are responding after a deadly synagogue shooting in the San Diego, California area. The suspect has now been identified.

According to CNN, a gunman with a semi-automatic rifle opened fire at the Chabad of Poway Synagogue in Poway, south of Escondido on Saturday. At least one person was killed and several other people were wounded before the shooter was stopped and surrendered to police.

From all indications, it could have been even worse if it weren’t for the actions of an armed hero.

President Trump tweeted Saturday evening that the shooter was stopped by an off-duty Border Patrol Agent.

“Sincerest THANK YOU to our great Border Patrol Agent who stopped the shooter at the Synagogue in Poway, California,” the president tweeted. “He may have been off duty but his talents for Law Enforcement weren’t!”

Poway Mayor Steve Vaus said the congregation “took security very seriously” and added, "I also understand from folks on the scene that this shooter was engaged by people in the congregation and those brave people certainly prevented this from being a much worse tragedy.”

The mass shooting is being investigated as a hate crime “because of statements that were made when the shooter entered,” Vaus explained.

Saturday is the last day of the Jewish Passover celebration.

The suspect has been identified as 19-year-old John Earnest. He has no prior arrests, at least in San Diego County.

Trump responded to the attack soon after it occurred, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

“My deepest sympathies go to the people that were affected, their families, their loved ones,” he told reporters outside the White House. “We are doing some very heavy research; we will see what happens and what comes up at the moment, but it looks like a hate crime.”

“But my deepest sympathies to all those affected, and we will get to the bottom of it.”

The Union-Tribune noted that Trump addressed anti-Semitic attacks during his latest State of the Union Address, saying, “We will not avert our eyes from a regime that chants death to America and threatens genocide against the Jewish people.”

He continued, “We must never ignore the vile poison of anti-Semitism or those who spread its venomous creed. With one voice, we must confront this hatred anywhere and everywhere it occurs.”

Conservative commentators responded to the attack and the way the media is addressing it.
