After the Russia collusion hoax fell apart, desperate Democrats set their sights on President Donald Trump’s tax returns in hopes that they might find something to use against him in the 2020 presidential election.
On Monday, Democrats were dealt yet another loss.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin denied House Democrats’ request for access to Trump’s tax returns because it serves no “legitimate legislative purpose," Fox News reported.
“As you have recognized, the Committee’s request is unprecedented, and it presents serious constitutional questions, the resolution of which may have lasting consequences for all taxpayers,” Mnuchin wrote in a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal.
Though liberals might claim that Mnuchin is “protecting” Trump, the Treasury secretary relied on the U.S. Department of Justice in the decision. The DOJ ultimately determined the department is “not authorized to disclose the requested returns and return information.”
“The Department of Justice has informed us that it intends to memorialize its advice in a published legal opinion as soon as practicable. Out of respect for the deadlines previously set by the Committee, and consistent with our commitment to a prompt response, I am informing you now that the Department may not lawfully fulfill the Committee’s request,” Mnuchin wrote.
The only thing left for Democrats to try now is to subpoena the IRS for Trump’s tax returns or file a lawsuit.
They just got done with a 2-year fishing expedition with the Russia collusion hoax, now they want to embark on a another one. How much more taxpayer do they want to waste?
President Trump has made it clear he has no intentions of turning over his tax returns at the demand of Democrats.
