A mother in the U.K. says she was arrested in front of her kids and jailed for 7 hours after she called a transgender activist by the “wrong” gender, according to the Daily Mail.
“Three officers detained Kate Scottow at her home before quizzing her at a police station about an argument with an activist on Twitter over so-called ‘deadnaming,’” the Daily Mail report stated.
The report added: “The 38-year-old, from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, had her photograph, DNA and fingerprints taken and remains under investigation.”
It’s been over two months and the mother, who is getting her Masters degree in forensic psychology, and police still haven’t returned her laptop or cellphone.
Scottow addressed the shocking incident in a post on an online forum called Mumsnet.
“I was then detained for seven hours in a cell with no sanitary products (which I said I needed) before being interviewed then later released under investigation ... I was arrested for harassment and malicious communications because I called someone out and misgendered them on Twitter,” she wrote.
The Hertfordshire Police responded to the incident, confirming the arrest but seemingly standing by the decision to arrest the mother.
“We take all reports of malicious communication seriously,” the police said.
It’s not the first time that the UK has gone too far in trying to police speech. TheBlaze reported:
“Police in Humberside, England, in January questioned a man who retweeted a transgender limerick, calling his actions a ‘hate incident’ and telling him ‘we need to check your thinking.’
A ‘community cohesion’ officer contacted Harry Miller, 53, after a complaint about the plant and machinery dealer's social media posts, The Telegraph reported. Officer Mansoor Gul cited 30 potentially offensive tweets, among them a limerick Miller retweeted that questioned if transgender women are biological women, the paper said.”
This is a dangerous road to travel down. Could this ever happen in the United States?
