The U.K. had the brilliant idea to try its hand at “knife control” amid a spike in violent crime, despite the nation already having strict, draconian gun laws.
In a bizarre strategy, police reportedly installed a “knife surrender bin” and encouraged citizens to give up their knives. Knife crime has apparently skyrocketed by 52 percent over the last year.
So what happened to the knife surrender bin?
Just one day later, criminals broke into the bin and stole the knives. They could now be used in future crimes.
Brilliant idea, guys.
“On the evening of March 13, the knife surrender bin in Weston was broken into by a number of people,” PC Jon Biggins reportedly told the Mirror. "The contents were recovered a short distance away, and the whole incident was caught on CCTV.”
He added: “We are in the process of identifying those responsible in order to bring about a prosecution.”
While the initiative to collect knives has resulted in roughly 1,000 knives being taken, it will likely have little to no impact on actual knife crime. As they just found out the hard way — criminals don’t follow the law.
It’s the same reason why gun control is so ineffective. Disarming law-abiding citizens does not make armed criminals any less dangerous, it just makes innocent people more vulnerable.
Someone should explain that to the socialist Democrats who are advocating for gun bans in 2020.
