There are few anchors on CNN who seem to hate President Trump more than Chris Cuomo. Don Lemon is one of them.
An on-air discussion Monday night about Trump’s Tuesday address to the nation concerning border security prompted Lemon to say something so crazy that even Cuomo couldn’t handle it and found himself rushing to the president’s defense.
Talking about the primetime speech, Lemon asked Cuomo, “Do you think there should be, I don’t know, a delay of some sort and then you can…”
He trailed off, but his meaning was clear. Intentional delays in live TV broadcasts are used to allow studios to edit out content deemed too inappropriate to be shown to general audiences.
The sudden shift in Cuomo’s facial expression revealed that he understood what Lemon was implying, too. And he didn’t like it one bit.
“Because people will believe it,” Lemon continued. “The president will say what he has to say. People will believe it whether the facts are true or not. I guess that’s a chance you take with any president.”
“Yeah!” Cuomo shot back.
“But this one is different,” Lemon corrected him. “And then, by the time the rebuttals come on, we’ve already promoted propaganda — possibly — unless he gets up there and tells the truth.”
Cuomo had some truth to lay on Lemon, though, informing him that Trump “has his right to make his argument to the American people.”
He wasn’t done yet, though, and told Lemon that, “By the way, wanting barriers along the border is not propaganda! It’s not immoral, it’s not wrong.”
Cuomo’s words directly contradicted those of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who proclaimed recently that wanting a border wall is an “immorality.” But he did appear to agree with former President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) who bragged about greatly lengthening the border fence between the U.S. and Mexico back during the Obama administration.
Cuomo’s reaction to Lemon’s propaganda-like suggestion for dealing with what he calls “propaganda” drew rare praise for the CNN anchor from conservatives.
Others focused on the absurdity of what Lemon suggested:
One Twitter commenter had a warning, though, about being too quick to praise Cuomo:
Fox News, Fox Business, NBC, CBS, and CNN all indicated that they will air Trump’s speech live and follow it up with a Democratic rebuttal by Pelosi and Schumer, The Hill reported.
