As Clovis High School prepared to take on Buchanan High School for the Central Section softball championship on Friday, the crowd received an unwelcome announcement about the national anthem.

More specifically, attendees were told by an announcer there would be no national anthem that night.

The patriotic crowd first responded with a strong round of boos. Moments later, something incredible happened.

Several people in the crowd stood up and started signing “The Star-Spangled Banner” a cappella-style. They didn’t need any music, the crowd was going to show its respect for America and the military one way or another.

The patriotism was infectious, according to a report from the Fresno Bee’s Anthony Galaviz.

Several people in the crowd removed their hats and placed their hands over their hearts while they sang, while others stood tall with pride for their country. Players even stopped their warm-ups to face the flag and show respect.

Event coordinator Bob Kayajanian admitted that he made a mistake with the national anthem, telling the Fresno Bee they will now be playing the national anthem before every game.

You can take the national anthem out of sports, but you can never take the national anthem out of Americans. God bless America.
