On Monday, CNN anchor Jake Tapper tried repeatedly to get socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to explain how she could possibly pay for the $40 trillion it would cost to fund her proposed government programs, including “Medicare for all.”
He failed every single time as Ocasio-Cortez was unable to answer the simple question.
“Your platform has called for various new programs, including Medicare for all, housing as a federal right, a federal jobs guarantee, tuition-free public college, cancelling all student loan debt,” Tapper said. “The overall price tag is over $40 trillion in the next decade.”
The CNN anchor pointed out that Ocasio-Cortez claimed tax hikes on the wealth could pay for the programs, but the tax increase would barely make a dent in the price tag.
“Where is the other $38 trillion going to come from?” Tapper asked.
Unable to answer, Ocasio-Cortez claimed without evidence that Medicare for all would “save the American people a very large amount of money.”
She went on to claim her programs are not “pie in the sky,” though she again was unable to explain how she would pay for them.
“I’m talking about the overall package,” Tapper pressed. “You say it’s not pie in the sky, but $40 trillion is quite a bit of money, and the taxes that you talk about raising to pay for this… only count for $2 [trillion].”
Deflecting yet again, Ocasio-Cortez told a personal anecdote about working at a restaurant and finding out her co-workers didn’t have health insurance.

At that point, she had even lost the CNN anchor.
“I’m assuming I’m not going to get an answer on the other $38 trillion,” Tapper responded.
