President Trump has created quite the controversy after expressing frustration with progressive Democrats in Congress who seem to him to do nothing but bash America.
First, he singled out Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), tweeting on Sunday, “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.”
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done,” he continued. “These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”
He seemed to be referring to just Omar, but he used plural pronouns, and many people took what he said as also applying to her progressive cohorts in Congress — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) — even though they were born in the U.S.
Second, he later bashed Ocasio-Cortez as well, quoting Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who said during an interview on Monday, “We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of Communists, they hate Israel, they hate their own country,” according to USA Today.
Then Trump tripled down during a “Made in America” product event, where he not only warned America about Omar but also said Ocasio-Cortez would destroy our economy if she got her way.
As reporters accused him of siding with white supremacists because he criticized non-white congresswomen, Trump said of Omar and AOC, “They’re very unhappy. All they do is complain. So all I’m saying is, if they want to leave, they can leave.”
He talked about how Omar once appeared to mock Americans afraid of al-Qaeda after the 9/11 attacks and how she referred to the 9/11 terrorists’ actions as “some people did something.” He also claimed Omar outright praised al-Qaeda but did not give a specific example.
“These are people who in my opinion hate our country,” he said, referring to AOC, Omar, and possibly other progressives. “You can say what you want. But get a list of all of the statements they’ve made. All I’m saying is that if they’re not happy here, they can leave.”
“They have to love our country. They’re congresspeople.”
When asked by a reporter if he was telling people born in America to “go back” to another country, Trump replied, “I never used any names,” appearing to say that he wasn’t talking about those particular American-born congress members in that particular statement.
“One of them is polling at 8 percent,” he added, possibly referring to an Axios poll that put Omar at 9 percent favorability among swing voters. In that poll, AOC fared a little better at an abysmal 22 percent.
Trump talked about how Omar came from the “failed country” of Somalia, successfully became a U.S. congresswoman, but is “never happy” and “says horrible things about Israel” and “hates Israel, hates Jews.”
He also bashed Ocasio-Cortez for keeping Amazon from building a new headquarters in New York.
“If they [Democratic leaders] want to gear their wagons around these four people, I think they’re going to have a very tough election,” the president said, appearing to refer to Tlaib and Pressley as well.
“Because I don’t think the people of the United States will stand for it.”
“These are people that hate our country,” he continued. “They hate it, I think, with a passion. Now, it’s possible I’m wrong — the voter will decide.”
“I do not believe this is good for the Democrat Party. Certainly, it’s not the party that I’ve known over the years.”
He added that if AOC gets her way with her “Green New Deal,” the economic success our country has seen recently “is down the tubes, people will lose their money, they’ll lose their wealth, you’ll have a crash like you’ve never seen before.”
