What We Know About Cesar Sayoc, Mail Bomber Suspect Arrested in Florida

October 26, 2018Oct 26, 2018

The biggest news of the week has been the suspicious packages and explosive devices mailed to prominent Democrat leaders, CNN headquarters, and actor Robert De Niro. In all, 13 devices have been discovered so far.

On Friday, authorities arrested 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc in connection with the attempted bombings at an auto parts store in Plantation, Florida.

On the live television coverage, officials could be seen surrounding a white van covered in window stickers. The van was later covered with a tarp and hauled away.

Photos began to emerge on social media of the white van, and the stickers appear to be of President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, various other anti-Democrat stickers, as well as stickers about youth and college soccer.

Cesar Sayoc is a former resident of New York and now resides in Aventura, Florida. Photos and videos from his social media accounts show him attending pro-Trump rallies during the 2016 elections, often wearing the trademark red Make America Great Again hat.

Court records show that Sayoc has a history of arrests for a variety of crimes, including theft, possession of illegal steroids, as well as a charge of making a bomb threat in 2002. Law enforcement allegedly was aware of Sayoc and his criminal history.

Florida voting records show Sayoc is a registered Republican in Miami-Dade County and listed as an active voter.

Investigators were led to his location after they discovered that several of the suspicious packages were sorted through a US postal facility in Opa-locka, Florida, just a few miles from Sayoc’s hometown.

Fingerprints and DNA taken from the packages and explosive devices were carefully examined, and a fingerprint from the package sent to Congresswoman Maxine Waters was confirmed to belong to that of Cesar Sayoc.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that Sayoc has been charged with five federal crimes, including illegal mailing of an explosive, and can face up to 58 years in prison.
